Hula is a dance form accompanied by chant (oli) or song (mele). It was developed in the Hawaiian Islands by the Polynesians who originally settled there. After staying four nights in Maui, I am on my way back to Hong Kong today. Maui is not an easy place to get to. I had to fly from Hong Kong to Tokyo first, transit in Narita for over 5 hours, then take a 7 hours flight to Honolulu. After another 2 hours stop over, I had to take another flight to Maui. From the time I left home till checking into the hotel, it’s almost 24 hours. Today, I had to do this all over… read more →

Meet Cathy Detrick … a hand woven artist lives in Maui. As I walked towards the hotel lobby this morning, I saw her handcraft stand. We chatted about her work. It’s amazing to find out that she travels extensively in Asia and has profound understanding and passion in ancient fiber art. You can see samples of her handcrafts from her website www.catherinedetrick.com. One of them incorporated a silk dragon fabric from the Qing dynasty with her hand woven cloth into a kimono style robe. She obtained silk fabric from an… read more →

I am in Maui attending a 3 days company event. We are staying at the Four Seasons Hotel. It’s a fabulous property, probably the best in Maui. Here is a shot from my room last night after I checked in.
I was so tired after a long trip and slept in till 9:30 AM this morning. Here is the first scene I saw. There will be more postings to follow in the next few days.
